Discover Pommery champagne
A house founded in Reims in 1836, whose soul bears the name of a single woman: Louise Pommery. During the 19th century, in a modern, reforming France, Madame Pommery invented the first ever Brut champagne, a revolution that defined the taste of champagne as the world knows it today. A builder, visionary and patron of the arts before her time, she also bequeathed to Reims one of the most spectacular estates in all Champagne: 18 kilometers of underground galleries cut into the chalk, topped by neo-Gothic buildings of Elizabethan inspiration. Pommery stands for delicacy and vivacity, heart and soul, a style of finesse that emphasizes the elegance of aromas rather than their power.
The history of Pommery
The history of Pommery champagne dates back to 1836, when a trading house was founded in Reims, which successively took several names before, on July 16, 1856, Alexandre Louis Pommery took over the business and joined forces with Narcisse Greno to found the company Pommery & Greno. In 1858, on the death of Alexandre Louis, Madame Pommery took full control of the business.
Madame Pommery, as she came to be known, radically transformed the company. In July 1868, she launched "the greatest worksite of the century in Reims": the transformation of Gallo-Roman chalk pits into champagne cellars. French and Belgian miners dug a network of galleries 30 meters deep and 18 kilometers long, adorned with ribbed vaults and monumental bas-reliefs carved from the chalk by sculptor Gustave Navlet. Above these cellars, from 1870 to 1878, she built an Elizabethan neo-Gothic estate to satisfy her Anglomania and the tastes of her English clientele.
Champagne Pommery was the first house to market a brut champagne in 1874. This revolutionary champagne, Pommery Nature 1874, broke with the very sweet wines of the time and established the style of modern champagne. On the death of Madame Louise Pommery in 1890, the house was taken over by her partner Henry Vasnier, his son Louis and his daughter Louise, wife of Guy de Polignac. From 1978 onwards, the house passed through the hands of various groups before joining the Vranken-Pommery Monopole group in 2002, headed by Paul-François Vranken.
Pommery Champagne terroir and style
The Brut Royal Brut Royal, the heart of the Pommery style, comes from 40 selected villages in the Côte des Blancs, Montagne de Reims and other Champagne regions, where the climate contributes to the liveliness and delicacy of the grapes. The three Champagne grape varieties (Pinot Noir,Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay) are blended in roughly equal proportions for accessible cuvées, while prestige cuvées are based exclusively on Grands Crus. The house keeps a Réserve Perpétuelle, a formidable library of wines from different years, enabling the creation of remarkably consistent blends.
Since 2014, the Domaine's vineyards have held the Viticulture Durable en Champagne and Haute Valeur Environnementale labels. The house is also committed to making the estate a living place open to contemporary creation: a daring underground museum unique in the world, where artists from the international scene engage in dialogue with chalk and time, season after season.
Pommery cuvées
Brut Royal
The emblematic cuvée, a faithful reflection of the house style. The Brut Royal symbolizes the heart of Pommery expertise: liveliness, freshness, finesse. Notes of citrus, white flowers and red berries, round and ample on the palate, this is the most accessible and typical expression of the smiling lightness that characterizes Pommery.
Brut Rosé Royal
The rosé version of Brut Royal: the Brut Rosé Royal Brut Rosé Royal is a greedy, fruity wine that expresses the elegance of Pinot Noir in a more luminous register. Notes of raspberry and strawberry, velvety texture and lingering finish.
Apanage
The cuvée Apanage was conceived as a confidential cuvée dedicated to gastronomy. More complex and rounder than Brut Royal, it explores the nuances of Pinot Meunier blended with the two other Champagne grape varieties. Available in white and rosé, it represents a remarkable intermediate step between the cuvée d'entrée and absolute prestige.
Cuvée Louise
The absolute prestige cuvée, a tribute to our founder. The blend is based exclusively on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes from Grands Crus terroirs. A prestige cuvée from selected Grands Crus and vintages, with a more demanding approach to grape selection, vinification and ageing, the Cuvée Louise is only produced in years deemed worthy of the name. Absolute purity, mineral tension and exceptional length. It is also available in a more refined version, with no dosage, in Brut Nature.
POP
A 20 cl blue glass bottle with a silver cap, for the Brut version, a pink bottle for the Rosée and a Golden bottle for the vintage version. The cuvée that breaks away from codes without betraying the Pommery style, fresh, lively and joyful, and which has won over a new generation of connoisseurs. A format designed for tasting on the terrace or during spontaneous festive moments.
Did you know?
In 1868, Louise Pommery bought a 50-hectare estate in the Hauts de Saint-Nicaise area, riddled with Gallo-Roman chalk pits that today form an 18-km labyrinth of galleries housing almost 30 million bottles. These chalk pits are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And it's in this same domain that Paul-François Vranken has installed works of contemporary art that add an extra dimension to the visit, making Domaine Pommery one of the most singular underground museums in the world.
