CHARTOGNE-TAILLET Champagne
The 11 hectares vineyard is plowed with horses. It is planted with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and some Arbanne. Every year, the only vinified cuvées (first press) are « Cuvées Saint Anne », in tribute of the saint who protects the village of Merfy.
This terroir offers wines with a lot of character, this is why champagnes from Maison Chartogne-Taillet are only sourced from vine of Merfy.
The family archives confirm that the winery tradition of the family finds its roots from the Romans ! Indeed, the Taillet family elaborates wine in Merfy since many generations. Fiacre Taillet started in the wine business since 1548, under the reign of François the 1st.
The Taillet family left some historic writings with rare and precious testimonials regarding their life as winemakers, the economic and political environment of the first half of the 18th century. Records of geological analyzes, meteorological and meticulous descriptions of each harvest progress and winemaking are available.
In 1870, Oscar Chartogne bought to Merfy his first vine for his grand-daughter. Marie Chartogne married Etienne Taillet in 1920, assiciating thus both names : Chartogne and Taillet.
Today, the vineyard and the winemaking management belongs exclusively to the family. They work toward a plot selection, in order to highlight each of them and according to the nature of the soil. Each soil has its own characteritics which are transmitted to the grape, this is precisely what Alexandre Chartogne is looking for.
