Champagne cellars in Reims: our selection for an unforgettable visit

Published by Julie Espirac-Noyelle - 19/05/2026 - Champagne World

Reims is one of the great Champagne destinations. Beneath its streets and boulevards lie kilometers of underground cellars dug into the chalk - the famous crayères, a UNESCO World Heritage site where millions of bottles rest in a unique atmosphere. To visit a cellar in Reims is to plunge into the heart of the history of the Champagne region, discover the secrets of the winemaking process and enjoy a champagne tasting in an exceptional setting.

Reims is easily accessible from Paris by train, 45 minutes by TGV from Gare de l'Est. An ideal stopover to include in your itinerary, with numerous hotels available in the city center close to the best houses.
Today we're going to explore together our top wineries to visit, with all the practical info you need to prepare your visit: prices, opening times, reservations and tastings available.

The wineries featured in this article:

Domaine Vranken-Pommery & Villa Demoiselle

Two addresses, one experience and one of the most beautiful architectural combinations you'll find in Reims. Located right in the heart of the city of Reims, this estate is a must for any traveler with a passion for champagne and heritage.

Domaine Pommery

Maison Pommery is one of the most spectacular champagne cellars to visit in France. Conceived in the 19th century by Madame Pommery in a unique Elizabethan style, it houses Gallo-Roman chalk pits dug 30 meters underground, accessible via 116 steps, where the Grand Foudre Pommery, capable of holding 100,000 bottles, rests.

The house is currently celebrating the 150th anniversary of its foundation, with a visit dedicated to the extraordinary story of Madame Pommery, the visionary woman who revolutionized champagne-making in the 19th century. The chalk pits are also home to the Experience Pommery, a contemporary art exhibition renewed each year, a unique journey that combines champagne discovery and a living art gallery.

What to see and do at Domaine Pommery :

Villa Demoiselle

Opposite Domaine Pommery, the Villa Champagne Demoiselle is an exceptional residence born of the transition between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. Restored over nearly four years under the direction of Paul-François Vranken, it houses a remarkable collection by Majorelle, Daum, Gallé and Serrurier-Bovy, all emblematic names of the period.

La Maison Ruinart

La Maison Ruinart is the world's oldest champagne house, founded in 1729 in the 18th century, long before most of the big houses existed. It's also the only one in Reims whose cellars have been listed as a historic monument since 1931 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2015. For that reason alone, it's well worth the detour.
The chalk cellars are nothing short of impressive, veritable underground cathedrals of chalk where Ruinart cuvées rest in ideal natural conditions of temperature and humidity. The Ruinart cellar tour is led by passionate guides who make the experience memorable and the atmosphere unique.

And if you're a gourmet, I really encourage you to check out the gastronomic experiences: the Ruinart lunch with the chef, or the dinners imagined by Arnaud Donckele (three Michelin stars) are absolutely extraordinary moments.

The House of Veuve Clicquot

The history of Maison Veuve Clicquot is marked by the creative energy of Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin, the visionary woman who, among other things, invented blended rosé champagne and remuage, the technique of gradually bringing the deposits down to the neck before disgorging. A legacy of innovation and elegance that can be found in every experience we offer today.

What's particularly well thought-out here is the diversity of tours available, depending on what you're looking for: an accessible introduction to Veuve Clicquot champagne for under €40, or a complete immersion in the ageing technique and the prestige cuvée La Grande Dame for confirmed connoisseurs. Small group tours are also available on request for a more personalized experience.

Visit the Veuve Clicquot estate:

  • Brut Carte Jaune, birth of a style: 36€ - 1h, historic cellar tour
  • L'art d'un champagne rosé d'assemblage: 60€ - 1h, rosé history + technique
  • Une Seule Qualité, la toute Première: 80€ - 1h30, elaboration + house style (privatizable)
  • L'art du vieillissement: 160€ - 2h, tasting of exceptional vintages (private)

The House of G.H. Mumm

Founded in 1827, the Maison Mumm is one of the world's most famous champagne houses, notably thanks to its emblematic Cordon Rouge cuvée, which is celebrating its 150th anniversary. Its underground cellars stretch 25 kilometers beneath the city of Reims, giving you the opportunity to lose yourself in the history of a house that owns 218 hectares of vineyards, including 160 classified Grand Cru.
The guided tour is led by passionate ambassadors, available in French, English, Spanish and Italian. I particularly like the Grand Cru Vintage Experience, which allows you to taste two RSRV 100% Grand Cru cuvées, a Blanc de Blancs and a Blanc de Noirs, to truly understand the expression of the Champagne grape varieties in their purest form. A champagne tasting experience not to be missed.

Mumm House Tours:

  • Cordon Rouge Experience: 32€ - cellar tour + 1 tasting (Cordon Rouge)
  • Pinot Noir Celebration: 42€ - cellar visit + 2 tastings (Cordon Rouge + Mumm Rosé)

La Maison Lanson

La Maison Lanson is one of the few champagne houses to vinify mostly without malolactic fermentation, which enables it to preserve the natural aromas of its wines and give them that characteristic freshness and vivacity. More than 260 years of know-how, and a house that opens its doors all year round with very well-constructed experiences, from the vineyard plot to the final tasting, right in the heart of Reims.

What I particularly like: the very affordable children's rates (€15 for 10-18 year olds, free under that age) and the possibility of accessing the boutique and tastings without a reservation, which makes it one of the most suitable houses for family or group visits, with no scheduling constraints. Don't forget to bring a jacket: the cellars are cool, even in summer!

Champagne Lanson tours :

  • La Création Originale: 32€ adult / 15€ child (10-18 yrs) / free -10 yrs - 1h30, visit + 1 tasting (Black Création)
  • La Création Emblématique: 40€ adult / 15€ child - visit + 2 tastings (Black Création + Rosé Création)
  • La Signature: 55€ adult / 15€ child - 2h, tour + 3 tastings (Black Création + Blanc de Blancs + Black Réserve)
  • La Vintage: 85€ adult / 15€ child - visit + 3 tastings (Black Création + Vintage 2013 + Clos Lanson 2010)
