Philippe Starck: a champagne fan
Phillipe Starck was born in Paris in 1949. His father was an aeronautical engineer. Philippe Starck was attracted to design from an early age. He studied at the Camondo school (specialized in the decorative arts). It was during the 80s that the designer made a name for himself with the general public. He designed everyday objects for brands such as Alessi, Kartell and Disform. From the outset of his career, he has kept two key values in mind: ecology and "democratic design".
In addition to his passion for design, Philippe Starck himself says he's crazy about undosed champagne. For him, champagne is a way of living with panache. Champagne remains his drink par excellence. Several houses have asked him to design their champagne labels. Philippe Starck gave them all the same answer: no...
The collaboration between La Maison Roederer and Philippe Starck
So how did La Maison Roederer and Philippe Starck come to work together? Quite simply because Philippe Starck wasn't against the idea of designing a label, but beyond the design, he wanted to participate in the development of the project as a whole, and more specifically in the conception of the champagne. Starck wanted the bottle he was going to dress to contain a champagne in his own image and likeness.
Although Philippe Starck wasn't on board, Frédéric Rouzaud (CEO of Maison Louis Roederer) agreed to take up the challenge with the designer. And so, for over 10 years, this collaboration has been renewed with 3 vintages: 2006, 2009 and now 2012.
The 2012 vintage
Until now, Starck has only worked with one type of champagne: a non-dosed Brut. What's new with the 2012 cuvée is that two champagnes, Brut and Rosé, have benefited from this collaboration in both their production and design.
In addition to Starck's superb labels with their colorful, uncluttered design, we appreciate the fact that these two champagnes come from the fantastic 2012 vintage. It's a vintage that, despite a difficult climate, produced one of the best vintages of the decade.
Roederer and Philippe Starck's Brut Nature 2012 champagne is crystalline, juicy and pure. Its golden yellow color with green highlights was naturally carried over to the bottle's label and packaging. A sunny yellow and a silver font for this no-dosage champagne with peach, lemon and hazelnut flavors. A unique tasting experience.
Roederer and Philippe Starck's Brut Nature Rosé 2012 is a fruity, intense champagne with an orange color and salmon highlights. This color inspired Philippe Starck for the label. Its spicy, wild raspberry flavors and evenly effervescent bubbles make this an exceptional non-dosed rosé champagne.
Beyond the collaboration between these exceptional men, specialists in their field, it is the love of champagne that is celebrated.
