The history of Dom Pérignon
Dom Pierre Pérignon (1639-1715) was a Benedictine monk whose father owned vineyards. At the age of 20, he became a monk. 8 years later, he was ordained a priest. Then, at the age of 30, he joined the Abbey of Saint-Pierre d'Hautvillers. There, he was in charge of the vineyards. He discovered the Limoux sparkling wine method. He then applied this practice to champagne wines. He will of course adapt it to these wines, previously known as "devil's wines". To arrive at the much-appreciated beverage, Dom Pérignon worked on quality and the losses that effervescence could cause. The nickname "devil's wine" was due to the numerous explosions champagne underwent during processing.
Dom Pérignon also advocated the use of corks. Thanks to his perseverance and passion for working champagne in new ways, he is considered the father of the méthode champenoise, achieving a perfect blend. The champagne legend was born.
Dom Pérignon and artists
Since the 2000s, Dom Pérignon has been collaborating with artists: filmmakers, sculptors, singers.... The famous champagne house combines the excellence of its talents with those of artists. These various collaborations give rise to ever more creative and original packaging designs, which sublimate the spirit of this house, as expressed in particular by the cellar master: Richard Geoffroy, who has been the house's cellar master for the last twenty years, has a great artistic sensitivity. The finesse and regularity of his champagnes is sublimated by these artists. These bottles become veritable works of art.
Every year, we wait to discover what surprise is in store for us, both in terms of taste and aesthetics.
Among the brand's collaborations are :
- David Lynch (American filmmaker)
- Martin Szekely (French designer)
- Marc Newson (Australian designer)
- Jeff Koons (American sculptor)
- Mickael Riedel (German contemporary artist)
- Bjork (Icelandic singer)
- Tokujin Yoshioka (Japanese designer)
Each of these artists has been able to put his or her own stamp on the famous house, designing not only labels and boxes, but also objects derived from and complementary to the champagne bottle (such as champagne buckets). In its quest for excellence, Dom Pérignon markets only vintage champagnes, exceptional champagnes. This year, the famous singer Lenny Kravitz is collaborating with Dom Pérignon.
Lenny Kravitz and Dom Pérignon
This year,Lenny Kravitz offers us his vision of the great Dom Pérignon 2008, as well as the Dom Pérignon Rosé 2006. The label has been designed with a metal texture on the iconic house coat-of-arms. Both vintages are very limited editions.
The singer, who for the occasion became the brand's creative director, also signed a box for the magnum (available in 2008 vintage).
The centerpiece of this unusual creation is a table (also designed by the singer). This table, in black lacquer with brass highlights, has a central opening, lit to showcase Dom Pérignon bottles, glasses and, above all, a refreshment center. No step in the tasting of this exceptional champagne has been left to chance!
