All about rosé champagne

With the warm weather back in full swing, you're thinking of having some friends over for a bottle of rosé champagne? Rosé champagne is a champagne with a beautiful pinkish hue that appeals to many connoisseurs when the sun returns. Here's what you need to know about rosé champagne, so you can impress your friends and family, or simply choose from among the various references.

What's so special about rosé champagne?

First and foremost, rosé champagne stands out from other champagnes thanks to its color, which can take on shades of pink, red or orange. This champagne is also particularly appreciated for its lightness, freshness and fruity accords, with notes of red fruit or exotic fruit.

What's the difference between rosé and white champagne?

The difference between rosé and white champagne lies in its beautiful color, due to the way it is made.

Rosé Champagne can be blended in two different ways:

  • rosé d'assemblage is a champagne made by blending white wines with 5 to 20% red wines;

  • rosé de macération is a rosé champagne made by macerating the juice and skins of black grapes for 36 hours. When maceration is shorter, between 8 and 12 hours, it's called rosé de saignée.

Is rosé champagne always less powerful than white champagne?

The answer is no!

Depending on the grape varieties used and the preferred method, a rosé champagne can have more or less powerful and pronounced fruit aromas.

Rosé champagnes based on a dominant Chardonnay grape generally have more subtlety, while rosé champagnes with a dominant black grape (Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier) generally have more body and power.

What's more, the longer the maceration, the windier the rosé champagne, whereas a champagne rosé d'assemblage is lighter and more delicate.

Why is rosé champagne often more expensive?

Rosé champagne is generally more expensive, as it requires more stages in the production process. Rosé champagne is becoming increasingly popular, and is frequently promoted as a champagne for special occasions, such as Valentine's Day.

You can find rosé champagnes in a wide range of prices. On EnviedeChamp, the price of a rosé champagne starts at around 25 euros, versus 20 euros for a non-vintage non-vintage brut champagne and 30 euros for a vintage brut champagne.

In short, a rosé champagne is often a little more expensive than a non-vintage brut champagne, but it represents excellent value for money when you want to entertain your guests with quality champagne.

When should you drink rosé champagne?

Whenever you like! Rosé champagne is best enjoyed on special occasions, but also in spring and summer when you're looking for a lighter, fruitier champagne. But if you're a fan of rosé champagne, it can of course be enjoyed all year round.

What dish to serve with rosé champagne?

Rosé champagne isn't just for starters or aperitifs! Contrary to popular belief, rosé Champagne offers a multitude of pairings, whether blended, bled or macerated.

Its notes of red berries usually lend themselves well to sweet and savory pairings, exotic cuisine or the flavors of Mediterranean cuisine. For seafood platters, choose a rosé champagne with a low dosage to match iodized flavors. For sushi and sashimi, opt for a light, fresh rosé.

Finally, if you wish to accompany your red meats with a rosé champagne, opt for a stronger rosé champagne such as a champagne rosé de saignée. For those with a sweet tooth, pair your rosé champagne with a red fruit dessert or other types of dessert (avoiding anything too sweet).

What are the best rosé champagnes?
