Organic Champagne: where does the industry stand?
In 2009, lrganic viticulture accounted for just 1% of Champagne vineyards, compared with almost 10% today! Organic viticulture in Champagne is on the rise, particularly in recent years, with initiatives in the sector booming.
- Since 1998, the Association des Champagnes Biologiques has brought together producers committed to converting their production to organic. To date, it has nearly 200 members, both winegrowers and wineries.
- Since 2019, the Chambers of Agriculture of the Champagne vineyards have joined forces with Bio en Grand Est for the "Structuring of the organic Champagne sector". In this survey carried out in 2024, we can note in particular that the number of producers committed to organic certification has tripled in 4 years (650 in 2023 compared with 200 in 2018).
- In addition, a number of Grandes Maisons are also committed to biodiversity, such as Louis Roederer or Ruinart.
The many risks associated with organic champagne production (phylloxera, powdery mildew, mildew, etc.) represent a major constraint, but the industry is making steady progress year after year to reach a sufficient harvest level.
